Parents should ensure of the following:
- Babies and toddlers are very much inclined to chew things, so always shoose cloth over fur when buying toys for children in this age range. Fur can be a choking hazard, along with bits that might come off such as buttons.
- Ribbons or strings can be a hazzard. Toys must have sturdy seams.
- Buy toys from reputable suppliers. A bargain toy is not a bargain if your child gets hurt.
- Check the age recommendation of the toy and that it suits your child. You will often see the following message: 'Not Suitable for Children under 36 months'. You must adhere to this because there may be parts which can come off and be swallowed.
- In the shop, test the toy out a bit by being firm but fair. It must be robust and well finished with no loose bits.
- Make sure the manufacturers name and address is clearly stated on the toy along with a CE mark.
- The toy should have a Lion Mark which is a symbol of quality and safety.
